German Food... Done Perfectly

>> Thursday, February 3, 2011

On Tuesday I posted about cooking and all-American meal. I explained that sometimes I just have to have American food and nothing will satisfy my craving until I get it. Well, the same goes for German food. Luckily, I can get it at a whim and I don't have to worry too much about finding it. Tonight we were wanting some German food so I want to introduce you to our absolute favorite German restaurant: Der Pschorr. This was one of the first German restaurants my husband took me to and I have never had better German food. We go there so regularly the staff know us quite well. As soon as we come in we get the question, 'Zwei Weißbier?' (Meaning, 'Two Wheat Beers?') and we alway politely accept.

We went tonight to because after a great American meal, we were in need of some good German food and, well, it had been about a week since we had been there so it seemed like a good time :)

After accepting the offer of two beers (really, how can you refuse?) we got our beers and sat and talked about the day. The atmosphere here is so comforting and welcoming. It is the kind of place you can sit for hours and enjoy your time at the restaurant and the time together.

If you run out of conversation or you want to find out a bit more about the restaurant, then the quarterly newsletter the restaurant puts out on every table is pretty good entertainment (if you read German). This newsletter talks about the events taking place in the restaurant as well as where Der Pschorr gets their food from. Der Pschorr is a restaurant that can boast that their food (everything from beef to vegetables) comes from local growers and everything is bio-friendly. The owners of the farms that supply this restaurant are investors in Der Pschorr, so making sure that customers get exactly what they expect is important to them and the restaurant.

We eventually ordered our meal and waited. We only need to order one main dish each because the portions here are very generous :)

I ordered a rabbit roulade (which means roll). This was a thin piece of rabbit meat topped with stuffing and rolled up and cooked. It was served on a bed of cabbage with sides of grilled polenta and winter vegetables. Everything was topped with an oregano cream sauce.

I ate every bite of this dish. It was perfect. The rabbit and stuffing had such a wonderful flavor. The rabbit was juicy and tasty while the flavor of the cabbage, polenta, and cream sauce heightened and brought together all of these flavors.

My husband ordered the Schweinhaxe (literally 'Pig Knuckle'). This is served with a potato dumpling (Kartoffelknödel) and a side of cabbage. He hadn't ordered this in a while and he must have enjoyed it because he ate every bite. Now, if only we had a dog to bring the bone home to!

As you can see, this is German food on steroids. This is food that is fresh, organic, and beautifully cooked. Der Pschorr is doing traditional food differently and beautifully. It is comforting, modern, traditional, and just like home. This is precisely why we keep going back over and over again. If you ever make it to Munich, and you could go to one place that represents what Munich is, Der Pschorr is that place.

I envy you. Pschorr is at the top of my list for Weißbier with Fraziskaner running a close second.
