A Trip to France in Munich

>> Sunday, January 9, 2011

No, we didn't actually go to Paris (although this picture makes me want to go back). We took a little trip to France last night by going to our favorite French restaurant in Munich. This restaurant is great. The food is wonderful, the staff is so friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is sweet, soft, earthy, and comfortable. We've been there many times, so the staff always recognizes us, plus it is a little benefit I get to enjoy is to hear my husband speak French to the staff (I love when he speaks French, it is such a beautiful language). The restaurant is called Le Faubourg (which is a general term for a suburb or district) and we definitely recommend it!

After being seated and served an aperitif of champagne, we got a look at the menu.

There is no permanent menu here, and all of the items are written on a blackboard that the waiter brings up to the table. All of the items on the menu are written in French. Because I don't speak or understand French, the waiter translated each of the dishes into German (spoken with a thick French accent). After deciding what we wanted, we ordered and my husband discussed the wine with the waiter. A bottle was ordered and we were ready for the meal.

For the first course I ordered scallops with thin slices of potatoes cooked in red beet juice and a beet puree. I really enjoyed this dish. The scallops were cooked perfectly (a crisp outside and a translucent soft inside) and with the addition of the potatoes and beet, the flavors came together as earthy and delicate. It was a wonderful way to start the meal.

My husband ordered the foie gras (goose liver) two ways. In the picture above, the top was a paté on top of a slice of toasted homemade bread. The other way was a liver pan fried on top of a slice of poached apple. He said the liver each way was done perfectly and the flavors were classic and rich.

This was my second course and was definitely my favorite of the night. This was a dish of ravioles (mini ravioli) filled with a rich cream cheese. They were then tossed in a truffle oil and topped with shavings of fresh black truffle. This dish was rich and decadent. The flavor of the truffle and pasta went beautifully well together. It was so delicious.

My husband had sot-i`y-laisse which translates to be chicken oysters (however, the French translation is the fool leaves it here). These are specific pieces from a chicken, and there are only two per chicken. These pieces are said to be the most tender and flavorful parts of the chicken and you can go here to see exactly where they come from. My husband really enjoyed this dish and all of the flavors were rich and smooth.

This was my main dish. Venison on a bed of cabbage with a black cherry reduction. This just screamed winter. Everything was warm with dark, comforting flavors. The sourness of the cherries really pulled the other elements together. It was a wonderful course.

My husband chose fish for his main course. This was filet of turbot in a calvados (apple liquor) sauce. My husband said this dish was delicious. The calvados gave it a great flavor without being over powering. This was a simple, beautiful dish.

We shared dessert. This was a dessert dish the restaurant put together so a decision wouldn't have to be made (it's next to impossible in my opinion). This allows you to have a little bit of everything. A molten chocolate cake on top of a vanilla custard, diced poached fruit, creme brulee, sorbet with calvados, and vanilla ice cream on top of some peach slices in red wine. Everything on this plate is to die for. Just so good and delicious. Nothing is too sweet and everything has so much flavor. Of course, my favorite was...

Of course.

The wine that we had to accompany this meal was a 2009 French chablis.

It was dry and a heavier white wine, but it was so good and easy to drink. It paired wonderfully with the entire meal.

This restaurant is great. The menu changes often (their website says at least once a week) and all of the ingredients are highest quality and fresh. Everything is cooked to perfection. The place is somewhere you can spend a long evening meal and enjoy every minute of it. Another great meal in Munich!
